How to clean a genuine cowhide rug

If you've recently purchased a genuine cowhide rug, we know you'll be dying to show it off. However, wherever you put it, there's always the chance it'll get stained. If your nightmare occurs and a cup of coffee gets knocked over or your friend drops some food on the floor, there’s no reason to panic. At Art Hide, we’ve created this quick blog to show you how low maintenance cowhide actually is.

Sponge off

If you get a few coffee drops or food stains on your rug, you can simply sponge them off. All of our rugs - even our cream and golden ones where stains might be more visible - are able to retain their natural oils, which means that stains sit on top of the material, rather than seeping in. This is great as it means you won't need to use a harsh detergent.

Avoid too much water

However, you shouldn't use too much water on your cowhide rug as it can ruin the balance of oils. This means you should avoid putting your rug in the washing machine or sink. Light sprinkles of cold water can be used on the corners of your rug though, which is a common way to counteract the excess heat that can cause the sides to curl up over time.
